Podcaster Joe Rogan provoked the full fury of the internet over the weekend by describing video games as a "waste of time". On the latest episode of the Joe Rogan Experience, he argued that video games are essentially too fun to get you anywhere you in life.
"Video games a real problem," he explained. "You know why? Because they're f**king fun. You do them, and they're real exciting, but you don't get anywhere. Three years later you could just be that same kid, playing video games, waiting for the next whatever the f*** game is...You're gonna waste your time."
Powerful words. While many of us can't claim to have changed the world with something as vital as, say, a podcast, Rogan's words of criticism toward video games prompted a massive response.
Developers, streamers, and gamers alike took to Twitter to argue that the podcaster's take on gaming lies squarely in "bad" camp. While many acknowledged that gaming isn't always the most reliable path into a career or source of income, why exactly does it have to be? Do we have to live in a world where every hobby or pastime needs to profit us?

The answer, of course, is no. As long as you're enjoying playing video games, they're about as far from being a waste of time as it's possible to be - something folk everywhere were quick to point out.

Hopefully Rogan can take on board a lot of what's been said in the last 24 hours... and maybe even come out with a new appreciation of what video games can do and be. They're great fun, after all - and that's never a waste of time.
