Who's for a round of Blackjack with Claptrap and Jack Black?

The upcoming Borderlands movie is assembling an increasingly bewildering amount of genuine talent. Lionsgate has just announced that none other than Tenacious D star Jack Black will be playing the sociopathic yellow robot Claptrap. You have to hand it to them, that is some spot-on casting.

Black will be providing the voice of Claptrap in the movie, although a part of me hopes he'll have to squeeze into a tiny yellow robot prop just so he can physically be on set with the other actors. That's method acting, kids.

"I am so excited to reunite with Jack, this time in the recording booth," said Eli Roth, director of Borderlands. "Claptrap is the funniest character in the game, and Jack is perfect to bring him to the big screen."

Black joins - and I still can't quite believe most of this casting - Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland, and Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Tannis. Roth has also said he really wants to get fans of the game involved as extras that can be killed off in increasingly strange ways. Is this movie going to be... good? I joked the other day that it won't be long until Bob Odenkirk gets cast as Handsome Jack, but now I'm completely obsessed with that idea - and the way things have been going for this movie, it could actually happen.

Production has yet to start on Borderlands, we do know that Craig Mazin is providing the script. Mazin is a name I'm sure you'll recognize of late. The writer bagged an Emmy for writing the hit show Chernobyl, and is currently working on HBO's The Last Of Us, which is another sign that Borderlands has attracted talent far beyond what I would have ever expected in a million years. It's not that I hate Borderlands, guys, it's just that I never thought a live-action Borderands movie would be taken seriously enough to have a chance of not sucking. All this big-name casting is a serious mission statement though, and I'm starting to get excited.
