'Cyberpunk 2077' Hits Record-Shattering One Million Concurrent Players On Steam

After seven years of waiting and hype, Cyberpunk 2077 is finally available to play on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. As it turns out, CD Projekt RED's ambitious sci-fi RPG picked up a fair few devoted fans during that seven year period: Cyberpunk 2077 has been live on Steam for less than 24 hours now, and it's already shattered the digital platform's record for most concurrent players in a single-player game.

When I say shattered, by the way, I mean really, truly obliterated. Destroyed. Eviscerated. Fallout 4 was the previous record holder with an impressive peak of 472,962 people all playing the open world RPG at the same time. Cyberpunk 2077 sailed past Bethesda's effort in a matter of hours, peaking at an eye-watering 1,003,264 (thanks, PC Gamer).

When you consider that are also players on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox consoles, Stadia, Epic, and GOG too? Well, then it's safe to assume that number is probably much, much higher. And it's already pretty damn high. Oh, and there are around a million people watching the game on Twitch too, so yeah. I guess Cyberpunk 2077 really is kind of a big deal.

While Cyberpunk 2077 will likely remain the undisputed holder of the single-player record for years to come, it's got some work to do to get close to the overall record for the most players in any game. The multiplayer battle royale PUBG peaked at an incredible 3,257,248 back in January 2018. I'd be really impressed if a single-player RPG could put up those numbers on a single platform.

Perhaps the in-development Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer mode will be the thing that finally topples PUBG from its perch? Not much is known about the RPG's mysterious multiplayer at all, apart from the fact that work started on it fairly late into the development of the single-player. Given the massive success of online modes like Red Dead Online and GTA Online - the latter of which will see its own standalone release on next-gen consoles next year - I'd wager that we'll be getting a sort of Cyberpunk Online.

"So, first, we don't call it modes," said CD Projekt CEO Adam Kaciński in an investor earlier this month (as translated by Seeking Alpha). "It's a separate dedicated production, a big production. We think about it as a standalone product."

If these single-player numbers are any indication, Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer mode could absolutely bring in the kind of numbers we needed to take it to the top. Watch this space.
