This is a big gamble

It is hard to believe that Fallout 2 was first launched way back in 1998 - and even more hard to believe that Bethesda was not the developer behind it.

However, that was most certainly the case for the second instalment in the Fallout series as Fallout 2 was developed by Black Isle Studios and published by Interplay Productions.

Of course, from Fallout 3 onwards, Bethesda stepped in as developer and publisher but fans still look back on Fallout 2 fondly, despite how much it has aged over the last 27 years.

That being said, a recent announcement has left fans feeling divided after it was revealed that a Fallout 2 fan-made remake will be an open-world RPG with a Steam release planned.

In an interview with The Gamer, Damion Daponte, a freelance video editor and the leader behind Project Arroyo, spoke more about the Fallout 2 remake project and reveals that the team of over 100 modders is aiming to turn the second Fallout title into an open-world RPG using Fallout 4’s engine.

The remake will also feature some of the mechanics found in the original (albeit reworked) as well as reintroducing the original Pip-Boy and even some assets taken from Fallout: New Vegas.

Not only that but Daponte reveals that the team will aim to upload the Fallout 2 remake to Steam.

"It’s just a platform that everyone has," they explained, "it’s easier to access, easier to update, easier to install - it’s more efficient. We would have to figure out all the specificities, making it so you have Fallout 2 and Fallout 4 and all of its DLC to make sure there are no legal issues. But we’re still looking into it.”

News of the Fallout 2 remake update took to r/classicfallout and it seems as though fans were left feeling divided over the changes the team would be making.

“These fan remakes never end up coming out,” the top comment read.

Another user had other hopes for the remake, saying, “I honestly think a 2D isometric remake with some QoL improvements would be what would freshen up Fallout 1 and 2. The isometric nature is part of its charm, if you can smooth out some of the clunkiness, I think it would be massively popular. Baldur’s Gate 3 showed there is a potential for mass appeal with turn-based CRPGs.”

TerroDucky added, “I think a lot of what made Fallout 2 so good is the style. I doubt a 3D remake would have the same feel.”

There is no release date for Project Arroyo’s Fallout 2 remake but fingers crossed its development is coming along well.
