After months of speculation, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was finally recently announced by Infinity Ward. Not to be confused with 2009’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward’s next title is a follow-up to 2019’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare - which in turn was a reboot of 2007’s Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. Confused yet?

So far, we know that Ghost is set to return, having originally appeared in the 2009 version. The game reportedly focuses on a Latin American drug cartel and previous rumours pointed towards the game having an Escape From Tarkov inspired mode, which insiders now have fresh insight on.

According to Call of Duty insider TheGhostofHope, the new mode will be called DMZ and it’s thought that it’ll launch in a beta phase. According to the leaker, developers need to test the mode with a large audience before they can finish it using the feedback and data gathered.

The mode has been likened to Escape From Tarkov which if you haven’t played it, is a hyper-realistic first-person shooter. As TheGhostofHope notes, it’ll force players to be “more tactical” as you now have the ability to lose weapons during combat.

Modern Warfare II’s third mode ‘DMZ’ will launch in BETA.

Escape From Tarkov players also have to deal with bleeding wounds and broken bones, in addition to monitoring factors like energy and hydration levels.

Call of Duty leaker Tom Henderson was the first to refer to the Escape From Tarkov inspired mode. He previously suggested that the mode’s objective-based gameplay would take place across an entirely new map.

Activision recently blamed Call of Duty: Vanguard’s poor sales on the World War II setting. Whether you agree with that or not, there’s no denying that the franchise could do with an overhaul, and the rumoured DMZ mode sounds like the perfect remedy. As with any rumour, this has to be taken with a pinch of salt until Infinity Ward confirms anything.
