Assassin's Creed: Black Flag fans divided over sequel announcement

Edward returns

Assassin’s Creed fans do have a sequel to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag that they might have missed, though to be fair it’s not the one we wanted.

Out of all the Assassin’s Creed games you could play, Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is arguably the best there’s ever been.

It told the story of Edward Kenway, a protagonist that could rival Ezio in charm and featured nautical combat that hasn’t been matched since

It’s the gold-standard for pirates games, and a killer Assassin’s Creed title too, though I think Like A Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii could give it a run for its money in terms of ocean-faring mayhem.

Many would love a sequel to Black Flag, myself included, and reports reckon Ubisoft has greenlit a remake for modern platforms but we haven’t heard anything about it yet.

There is technically a sequel though, Assassin’s Creed: Forgotten Temple which releases later this year.

It’s not a video game, it’s a manga, but it does feature Edward as the lead character and takes place after the events of Black Flag so it counts as a sequel.

The announcement for the title read: “Discover a new adventure of the legendary pirate Assassin, Edward Kenway, as he sets sail across the mysterious waters of South Asia in search of hidden secrets and untold treasures! A sequel to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Assassin's Creed: Forgotten Temple releases Fall 2025.”

Fans in the comments were excited to be reminded of the new release, after all Edward Kenway is a very popular character amongst the community.

“I forgot about this being announced!” and “I didn’t see this one coming” were just a couple of the comments.

Some were less pleased though, after all it’s not the AAA follow-up we’ve been asking for since 2013.

Fear not though, I’m sure we’ll revisit Edward and his crew eventually, whether it be through a remake or a whole new adventure.
