Stepping into another world has always been the great allure of video games, and with VR the experience is elevated to new immersive heights. This means that virtual reality headsets, with their screens that fill your entire field of view combined with wizardry that lets you move within and interact with the digital world, are some of the hottest gadgets in gaming right now.

And you can currently get one of the very best at a massive discount. The PlayStation VR2 is available at Game for £349.99, down from £529.99. Frasers Plus members can save another £10, bringing the price down to £339.99. FYI, you’ll need a PlayStation 5 in order to play with the PlayStation VR2.

While VR gaming has previously required a complex setup of cameras to work properly, the VR2 uses built-in cameras to keep you oriented within the virtual space. You only need one cable plugged into your PlayStation to set this up, although having a decent amount of space around you is highly recommended.

The PSVR2 features 4K visuals, a 110-degree field of view, and 3D audio for an all-encompassing experience. You’ll get to controllers, one for each hand, included in the set, and there are more than 500 games available for the system. Some highlights include Skyrim VR, Beat Saber, Minecraft, and Moss: Book 2.

Customers at Amazon have been very impressed with the PS VR2, with a 4.3 out of 5 average from 250 reviews.

“Overall, fantastic,” said one five-star review. “The price reduction was the deciding factor for me and if you want a high-end VR gaming experience without an expensive PC gaming rig, this is the one for you.”

“The OLED/HDR experience has been great, it feels like being in the sunshine when it’s sunny in a game!” said another happy VR player. “The image itself isn’t a 4K pin sharp experience, it’s more like looking at an old CRT screen where you can see the separation of the pixels. None of that has outweighed the fun I’ve had with it though.”

Another added: “It’s a great, immersive experience. I don’t think I will ever play Gran Turismo 7 on a flat screen again, just in VR. Great product overall, but you know, it’s still a new thing, a whole new experience, so if you want to make sure it’s fit for you, be sure to try it before you buy it.”

Others have noted that VR can make some people feel sick, and that the headset could be more comfortable: “Whatever you do, test your self first for VR sickness. If you don’t get that you’re good to go…but wait! The next obstacle to overcome is just how painful this is on the bridge of your nose. The thin piece of rubber is all that protects your nose from hard plastic from the full weight of the headset.”

Some customers have complained that it’s just a gaming device and won’t allow you to watch movies in a VR environment: “I was more than a bit chagrined to discover it did not allow viewing of 3D or VR movies etc.”

There are other VR headsets available, with the best budget-friendly one being the Meta Quest 3S starting at £289.99. For the deeper pockets, there’s also the Apple Vision Pro that behaves more like a computer on your face. Just be sure to hold your breath before reading the £3,499 price tag.

While it’s marked down to £349.99, the PlayStation VR2 is the way to go if you’re already set up with a PS5.
