10 free horror games to play this spooky season

The season is upon us and so is this scary collection

Angharad Redden

Angharad Redden

Ok, it may still be September but with October just around the corner, it is almost time to start celebrating the spooky months and what better way to do that than by playing a spooky game?

The only thing that won’t be spooky is the price as all of these upcoming scary titles are free to download right now.

All you have to have is a PC with access to Steam and you are good to go.

So without further ado, let’s take a look at what is available to play this upcoming October.

First up is Submergent, a horror title which will task you with exploring and navigating an underwater cave in your submarine.

With just a dingy submarine and a small underwater light to your name, this hour-long experience will see you navigate the murky depths and everything that lurks throughout.

Scotophobia/
Dark Games DGG

Those scared of the dark should try Scotophobia, a psychological horror where your accommodation rapidly changes and turns against you.

With mysterious guests now taking up room in your home, will you be able to take back control, keep your sanity and most of all, survive?

To break up the horror for a moment but still keep on the spooky side of things, you can relax with Whimel Academy.

This cosy time-management dating sim will see you take on the role of a witch or wizard attending a magical school.

I checked out the demo for this one and if you want to play a witchy game without the spooks, then Whimel Academy is perfect for you.

Cursed Deal is perfect for those who want to play a spooky game but don’t want to go it alone.

The co-op horror game pits 4 against 1 where teams and roles can change. With the one vampire hunting down its prey, you never know when the roles will be reversed before the ritual has completed.

So Many Zombies/
Casual Distraction Games

What is Halloween without some zombies? That is why you should try out So Many Zombies.

The fast-paced top-down shooter with roguelite elements will see you go up against hordes of the undead.

Set in a bullet-filled battlefield, you will need to survive for as long as possible but with each wave getting more populated, things are going to get quite tricky.

Again, I have you covered with a more chilled spooky title.

This time it is Daughter of Crone, a fantasy RPG with pixel-art visuals.

Players will take on the role of a young witch named Eyfrid who must master the way of magic by casting spells, brewing potions and exploring the mystical kingdom she calls home.

Astrumis is another co-op horror title and this one takes place on an abandoned spaceship.

With one player controlling the lone survivor and the other taking on the ship’s controls, you will have to work together to survive against a mysterious monster who seems adamant to take you both down.

After Me/

If you want more psychological horror then After Me is not one to miss out on.

This first-person survival horror follows Tom who has recently bought a new house.

Despite him wanting to spend the first few days alone, his peace is soon shattered when he soon discovers he is far from alone.

Now the only thing left to do is find out the house’s secrets and why it has lured him there.

Just because it’s spooky month, that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy another farming simulator.

That is why We Harvest Shadows is perfect for fans of the genre as this “first-person farming horror allegory” follows the story of Garrett who has moved to the country from the city.

Although his days are filled with running his farmstead and doing his chores, his nights are a whole lot different as something stalks him from the shadows.

Inspired by horror titles such as P.T., this farming horror is like nothing you have ever seen before.

Last but not least is Horror at the Harpers, a first-person horror adventure that follows the story of Tony, a father on a desperate search to find daughter, Ellie.

However, he soon discovers that the only way to do that is by connecting to the spirit world and it isn’t long before he must face the demonic forces threatening to take control.
